Mount Charleston Hill Climb - 2011

MCHC_flyer_png[1]
If you haven't heard, Red Burro Racing is putting on the Mount Charleston Hill Climb this year. As a Red Burro, you are contractually obligated to participate in one form or another. Don't believe me? Just ask Mike or Mike ESQ. Failure to either race or show up and volunteer will result in an immediate swapping of that cute red burro for a hideous blue elephant. Your political alignment will forever be questioned!

Seriously, though, please come and show your support. Registration is cheap, you can dress up in a costume, and you'll get a free set of arm warmers in your swag bag. There will also be a BBQ lunch and chairlift rides at the top. That way the entire family can come out and get a better understanding as to why dad and/or mom is so exhausted each Saturday.

Leave a comment and let us know just what level of support we can expect from you, our loyal Red Burro racer.

Pedal On!

LOTOJA 2010, etc...

P1010016
Yes, it's that time of year again. It's the time of year when many of us begin to look forward to eating solid food and sleeping in our beds past 6am. And while the Red Burro crew hasn't been as cohesive this year (Tony riding in Hawaii - see above, Erica in SLC, Steve and others traveling for work, and Jim at the "spot" every morning at 5:00ish), we're still all anticipating our time together in Jackson Hole.

Good luck to all next week. We'll see you in the shadow of the Tetons.

Oh, and in case you didn't already know, last month Al Thresher went down in history as the fastest single speed mountain biker at the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Those of you who have ridden a single speed mountain bike know just what an accomplishment that is. Those of you who haven't, well, it's pretty darn amazing. Seriously.

Mt. Charleston Hill Climb...2008?

MCHC

Remember way back when, once upon a dream, in 2008 there was that one hill climb bike race that we organized? Remember? Well, apparently someone remembered and he's organized an obscene number of photos to help you remember. Check them out here. There are some really good ones in there and Daniel Williams, the photographer, would appreciate it if you took a look. As I was browsing the photos I was reminded of not only the great group of cyclists in our community, but also of our collective eating disorder. Good times...

2009 RED BURRO RACING KITS

Chad Slade has been hard at work on the next generation of Red Burro Racing kits, and I think we'd all agree that it's about time for some new digs. The particulars follow.

Clothing Information:

  • Castelli will be the brand of choice. We will buying the Rosso Corsa line of the Castelli jerseys and bib shorts. This means the "Free Bibshort" and the "Pro Tour" jersey. The good stuff.
  • Because the color scheme will be similar to what it is now (black, red and white), there should be no need to order new arm warmers, coats, vests, etc... If you just order bibs and a jersey, all your old clothing will match just fine. (If you do want new coats, vests, etc., feel free to order them, though.)
  • Castelli may fit you a little differently than your current kit. Click here for their sizing chart.

Order Information:

  • All orders must be placed through Chad. We'd like the order to go out as soon as possible, so please email Chad with what you would like. Chad's Email
  • Here is the form.  Download Red Burro Order Form.
  • Prices are currently $150 for the bib shorts and $90 for the jersey. Remember, this is good stuff.

Other:

  • Once the design is finalized, we will post it here on the website.
  • The clothing must be paid for before the order is placed.
  • Anybody can order a kit. You don't need to live in Las Vegas or necessarily even ride a bike to order some fancy bicycling clothes, so spread the word.

Questions or comments? Let us know...

Cervelo Recovered!

Scott posted this under the thread for his stolen bike, but we have people still asking what happened so I have created a new post here. All it's missing are the Law & Order audio effects....enjoy!

By Scott:

"Recovered, my bike has been" as Yoda would say.

So the skinny on the recovery is a long story...so grab a snack and a comfy sitting position. Lara at McGhie's Bike Outpost in Blue Diamond had a guy come in on Wed, Jan 28 trying to sell my bike. She called the main McGhie's shop and proceeded to tell them the story. Sean had worked on my bike, so he remembered it and then got our number from Los Fellows. They called Andrea and Andrea called me...told you it would be long. So I'm driving home from work finding out that my bike could possibly be recovered. Talked to Lara and figured out a civilian sting op.
Tried to get the police to help, no luck...thanks 5-O. Lara is my hero. The next day the guy called her to check to see if she had the cash and would be there. Lara was smart enough to get out there, leave a sign on the door when he came that she would be right back with the cash. She hid out in the cafe next door and took pics of the dumb arse with my bike in the back of his car. Meanwhile, she's texting and calling me and I'm trying to light a fire under Detective Rubio's donut filled body to do something, but to no avail. So 9-11, Lara and I must have called simultaneously because as I'm describing the incident, the dispatcher on the phone tells me her co-worker next to her is taking the same story. They send officers and Kenneth Harding, a 47 yr old white male, 6-4, 250, just out of prison on parole, gets caught red handed and they book him for felony burglary. Want to know his address? j/k. He had told Lara on that Wed that he had 2 Cervelos. But when the cops put the heat on him to talk, he said he never had the other one...he was going to steal another bike out of the same garage, my wife's bike. Yikes! Bike is not the same of course after being in a convict's hands for a month. No respect for carbon. Geez. Again, Lara is my hero...big thanks go out to her for all her efforts, truly heroic.

What exactly is Cactus Cup?

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, one of the nation‘s most famous mountain bike festivals is being held right here in Las Vegas.  The Mountain’s Edge Team is hosting the 2008 Cactus Cup mountain bike festival and using it to help fight women’s ovarian cancer and to promote kids safety and fitness.  Professional and Olympian athletes will be here from around the country competing for the biggest cash purse in mountain biking.  Friday night, racers will race up Exploration Peak!  Saturday and Sunday mornings they will race on the mountain bike trails in Red Rock Canyon, and on Saturday night, Buffalo Drive south of SR 160 (Blue Diamond Highway) will be closed down to all traffic and opened to a world-class bike race with athletes from all over the nation competing in laps around the median.  It is a fat tire crit race, where riders race their mountain bikes on the street.  Between the Semi-Pro Men and Pro Women, the race course will be opened up to all local kids for a really cool FREE kids race with all the professional lighting, sound, and announcing the pros get! Kids can come early to get their bike checked for safety and to participate in a FREE bike safety rodeo to learn basic street safety and bike handling skills.  No need to pre-register the kids, as this race is free and open to all kids 3-13 years old, with any kind of bike and helmet.  There will be free food, drinks, and live entertainment by Misty Murphy and Sparkle Motion.  A full schedule of events, including maps and races for local adults too, from beginner to pro, can be found on www.cactuscuplasvegas.com.

USA Crits Finals

If you like this, we are also doing a kids race between the pros at the Mandalay Bay USA Crits Finals on Thursday night, September 25.  This is very fun for the kids and very exciting for the adults to watch as professional and amateur cyclists from around the country race for the USA national title.  It will be televised live on Universal Sports.  There are still spots for adults to race at www.finals.usacrits.com.  Kids do not need to register in advance and their race is free.

LOTOJA Thanks

I think we need to thank Emily Francis and Erica Tingey for being our hotel coordinators again this year! Thanks to them we were able to plan way ahead and avoid the headache of fighting for rooms.
Also, thank you RB Board for the other arrangements: Dave K.'s pancake breakfast and the great dinner on Saturday night.
The Red Burros were a team not to be messed with again this year! Congrats to all of our great riders!!!

Update from the Red Burro Board

In our attempt to provide positive experiences for each Red Burro, we try to apply any funds from donations, sponsors, etc to events or activities that will reap maximum group utilization. The purchase of the trailer, for example, was an effort to unite the Red Burro team at races and other biking activities throughout the area.

Our two major events for the year our the Mt. Charleston Hill Climb and LOTOJA. The vast majority of the gold in the Red Burro coffer is applied to these two doings by way of food, transportation, permits, etc... Knowing that this is where we will be able to maximize benefit to the group, we have put the team's resources into funding the Mt. Charleston Hill Climb. This is truly an important event for not just the Red Burros, but for the entire Las Vegas cycling community.

In the past the hill climb has generated enough surplus to allow for group breakfasts before LOTOJA and free transportation for your bicycles. This year that surplus is not guaranteed and we are asking for your cooperation and understanding in case our return is red instead of black. Breakfast will still be served and bikes will still be transported. The only caveat is that we may ask you to help share the cost.

If you are planning on sending your bicycle via the Red Burro trailer, please leave a comment on this post so that we know how many bikes are making the trip. If you want breakfast the morning of LOTOJA, please leave a comment as well. We sincerely hope that each of you has a safe and enjoyable end to your biking season in the shadows of the awesome Teton mountains. Thank you for making Red Burro Racing the great team that it is.

Very Truly Yours,

The Red Burro Board
